Digital Manufacturing Consultant (GMP, Four-Walls Pharma)

Initial 6 months contract (will extend) | Outside IR35 | Start within 4 weeks | Remote + occasional travel for workshops (UK/Europe) 

This role suits someone who’s spent time inside GMP manufacturing sites and understands how plants operate day to day. It’s a four-walls manufacturing assignment, not a supply chain-only brief.

You’ll join a Life Sciences consultancy supporting one end client across multiple sites. The estate is mixed: brownfield modernisation plus greenfield input at concept/design stage.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead multi-site discovery: site visits, workshops, stakeholder sessions
• Assess digital and process maturity across GMP manufacturing operations
• Identify gaps across processes, data, and manufacturing systems
• Build investment-grade business cases: value, ROI/TCO, benefits story
• Produce a practical roadmap that the client can implement
• Work across Ops, QA, Engineering, Automation, Site IT/OT and vendors
• Provide input into greenfield design direction where needed

Important note: Implementation and validation execution sit with the end client. Your focus is on defining what needs doing, why it matters, and what happens first.

What you need

• Four-walls GMP manufacturing experience (embedded on-site at some point in your background)
• Digital manufacturing transformation exposure: digitisation, value mining, automation across shopfloor + manufacturing systems
• Strong business case capability (value quantification, ROI/TCO thinking, benefits logic)
• Manufacturing systems literacy: MES, EBR, ERP, LIMS, LES, WMS, IoT
• Enough IT/OT understanding to hold your own with Automation and Site IT: connectivity, interfaces, data flows, and plant constraints
• Strong stakeholder management across Ops, QA, Engineering, IT/OT and vendors

Nice to have (not blockers)

• Respiratory manufacturing exposure
• Digital maturity models and roadmap frameworks
• Concept-level familiarity with modern factory architecture thinking (UNS, HighByte, HiveMQ, Cognite)

Not a fit for

• Supply chain-only digital profiles
• Corporate IT Business Partners without manufacturing site exposure
• PMO-only programme managers (governance without hands-on discovery and roadmap ownership)
